US Lacrosse Announces Briana Scurry as LaxCon Keynote Speaker

US Lacrosse has named Briana Scurry, a former two-time Olympic gold medalist goalkeeper for the U.S. women's soccer team, as the keynote speaker at LaxCon next month in Philadelphia.
SPARKS, Md. — Briana Scurry, a former two-time Olympic gold medalist goalie with the U.S. women’s soccer team, will deliver the keynote address at the 2019 US Lacrosse Convention (LaxCon) in Philadelphia Jan. 11-13.
Scurry, who led the Americans to the 1999 FIFA World Cup championship by making an iconic save against China in the shootout of the final, will take the stage before thousands of lacrosse coaches, officials and industry leaders in the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown ballroom at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12. US Lacrosse CEO Steve Stenersen will offer opening remarks before welcoming Scurry to the sport’s largest professional development conference and trade show.
“It’s an honor to be the keynote speaker at the US Lacrosse Convention,” Scurry said. “Lacrosse has so much going for it — the skill, the speed, the tradition. It’s great to watch. I’m looking forward to sharing my story with the lacrosse community and hopefully to providing some tips and lessons learned that will help the sport continue to grow.”
US Soccer named Scurry its starting goalkeeper in 1994, and she went on to start 159 of her 173 international appearances. She gave up just three goals in Team USA’s run to the 1996 Olympic gold medal in Atlanta. Scurry helped the Americans back to the Olympic championship game in 2000 before they captured a second gold medal four years later.
The 1999 FIFA World Cup final against China represented a seminal moment in American sports, as the teams battled to a 0-0 tie through extra time before more than 90,000 fans at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. Scurry made a diving save in the shootout round — the only stop of 10 shots fired by both teams — to help Team USA to the 5-4 shootout victory.
“We are delighted and grateful to have Briana Scurry as the keynote speaker of our convention,” Kim Rogers, director of events at US Lacrosse, said. “Her accomplishments as a world-class athlete speak for themselves, but her drive and dedication to causes off the field are equally impressive. She’s become a well-renowned speaker at events, and we can’t wait to welcome her to LaxCon.”
Scurry was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2017. She was a founding member of the first professional women’s soccer league, the WUSA, in 2001. She played collegiately at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Mass., recording 37 shutouts in 65 starts and helping UMass reach the 1993 NCAA tournament semifinals. Scurry’s playing career ended in 2010 due to a head injury, one of several causes for which she has since adopted advocacy.
LaxCon represents lacrosse’s largest professional development conference, trade show and interactive fan fest. The convention is open to the public, and members of US Lacrosse always save $40 on registration vs. non-member pricing. Online registration continues at $35 below walk-up rates for a limited time.
