UC Davis Dominates Fresno State to Win MPSF Title

UC Davis has enjoyed unprecedented success throughout the 2021 season, winning 11 games and securing the top seed in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.

However, to make this season one for the record books, the Aggies needed to get past Fresno State in the conference championship on Saturday evening. UC Davis had fallen to San Diego State in two consecutive MPSF title games, but this time, it would face a Fresno State team it had beaten three times this season.

The season of firsts continued with UC Davis’ first conference championship thanks to a trio of five-goal scorers in a 23-13 rout of Fresno State in the MPSF final. Not only was it the Aggies’ first championship, but it was also the program’s first MPSF tournament win since 2010.

Sorana Larson, Anna Hofgard and Maddie Myers each scored five goals to lead UC Davis to the big win. Larson, the second player in program history to drop 60 goals in a season, scored 14 times in the two wins over Fresno State.

Larson scored twice in a first-half run that gave UC Davis an 8-4 lead with 11:24 remaining in the period. The Bulldogs, though, answered with a four-goal run of their own, using four different scorers to level the score.

Up 10-9 coming out of halftime, the Aggies scored six straight goals to take hold of the game once again. Hofgard had a pair of goals in the run that gave UC Davis an insurmountable 16-9 lead.

UC Davis cruised to the championship thanks to another goal from Larson, this time going behind the back.
